The Ohio River at Cincinnati is not one river but two currents of history running side by side: the commercial artery that made the city the largest inland port west of the Alleghenies by 1850, and the border that, for decades before the Civil War, separated a slave state from a free one. Steamboats defined the first of those stories. From the water, the Cincinnati riverfront reads as a single composition: Great American Ball Park, the Bengals stadium, the Carew Tower, and behind them the hillside terraces of Mount Adams. The city was laid out to face this water, and it still does. Evening light flattens the Kentucky bank and lifts the downtown towers into relief.
